Low back pain (LBP) is an important clinical, social, economic, and public health problem affecting the population indiscriminately. It is a disorder with many possible etiologies, occurring in many groups of the population, and with many definitions. Most of the time lower and upper back pain causes due to a strain of the muscles, or other soft structures (e.g., ligaments and tendons) connected to the back bones (vertebrae). Sometimes it is the cushion between the bones (inter-vertebral disc) which is strained, and which bulges out (herniates) and a press on the nearby nerves (as in sciatica) and it is the pain who take us to the doctor.
Common causes of back sprain and strain include:
- Lifting a heavy object, or twisting the spine while lifting
- Sudden movements that place too much stress on the low back, such as a fall
- Poor posture over time
- Sports injuries, especially in sports that involve twisting or large forces of impact
